Unhosted aims at separating web applications from their data storage and makes it possible to "bring your own storage". The increased interest and use of cloud based applications by the research community makes having control over your data important. The concern for privacy and availability of data may make Unhosted a best of both worlds approach: use "cloud" applications while remaining in control of the data. SURFnet is preparing for a proof of concept in 2012 which will aim at making it possible for students and researchers to try out Unhosted applications using existing federated identities provided by their institute.
