THE NEXT NET

28th of november (RAI, Amsterdam)

Deze informatie in het Nederlands

The rather anonymous start of the Arpanet, the precursor to the internet, dates back to 1969, the same year that man first set foot on the moon. Where space travel captured the minds and imagination of a whole generation instantly, it has taken the internet far longer to gain the same type of mass acceptance. But patience has its rewards: the space age has been conquered by the digital frontier. The use and usability of the internet is still growing at an almost abstract rate. The Next Net is a conference organised by ISOC.nl where we look to the bright future of this versatile network of networks, the internet.

The Next Net

The arrival of the browser and the home computer in the early nineties of the twentieth century meant the start of the digital era. We find ourselves on the threshold of a new age in which the internet will uncover new grounds. Ever smaller devices, wireless connections and new networked applications make it possible to communicate and interact across various platforms and geographic boundaries. But despite its three decades of existance, and a spectacularly fast acceptance in the daily life of the masses, the internet is still far from mature. During the conference we will try to look ahead, and see where the co-development of internet and society is heading. Technology leads to significant changes in societal structures and social processes. Developments and applications in the field of mobile internet can be of great influence on the way in which we communicate, gather and share knowledge and information and do business. What will the network society of the future look like? Is the world big enough for the internet, or will space and cyberspace melt together? And how would an interplanetary internet look like? What technical innovations can we expect in the area of mobile internet, and how will these applications be used? And the ultimate question: how will the internet support the evolution of (human?) knowledge?

Speakers:

  • Dr. Vinton Gray Cerf (USA):
Inventor of TCP/IP, chairman of ICANN, a father of the internet
  • Rob Kitchin (Ireland):
Senior lecturer in Human Geography - National University of Ireland Maynooth
    Co-author of 'Mapping Cyberspace'
  • Frode Greisen (Denmark):
Vice President and Chief Internet Officer of Ebone (the main subsidiary of Global TeleSystems Group Inc. and the first European internet backbone)

Time: 12:00 - 19:30
Place: Auditorium of the RAI, Amsterdam
