Gridforum Nederland en Internet Society organiseren samen op 23 oktober 2008 een masterclass over XtreemOS met Christine Morin. Christine Morin is Research Director aan het INRIA Rennes Bretagne-Atlantique Onderzoekscentrum. Recent won ze de Excellencia Prize 2007 in de categorie "Fundamenteel Onderzoek". Momenteel werkt ze aan het ontwerp van een operating system voor high performance computing in computer clusters. Ze stond ook mee aan de wieg van de start-up Kerlabs. Sedert juni 2006 coördineert zij XtreemOS, een project met subsidies van de Europese Unie dat zich richt op grids en operating systemen voor supercomputer toepassingen. Dit project maakt deel uit van het Zesde Kaderprogramma, heeft een budget van 30 miljoen euro en brengt 19 partners uit de academische wereld en het bedrijfsleven samen uit zeven Europese landen en China.

Toegangsprijs voor de masterclass voor niet-leden van ISOC.nl is EUR 100, leden van ISOC.nl en Gridforum.nl kunnen zich gratis inschrijven. (word lid!). De masterclass word gehouden op 23 oktober 2008 van 13.30 uur tot 17.00 uur. Locatie is de campus van de Vrije Universiteit (Zaal S1.11, De Boelelaan 1085, 1081 HV Amsterdam, zie routebeschrijving). Er is zoals altijd een beperkt aantal gratis plaatsen beschikbaar voor AIO's en studenten. Na afloop is er een borrel om nog even na te praten met de spreker en andere deelnemers.

Inhoud van de masterclass
The emergence of Grids enables the sharing of a wide range of resources to solve large-scale computational and data intensive problems in science, engineering and commerce.
While much has been done to build Grid middleware on top of existing operating systems, little has been done to extend the underlying operating systems to enablee and facilitate Grid computing, for example by embedding important functionalities directly into the operating system kernel.
The XtreemOS project aims at investigating and proposing new services that should be added to current operating systems to build Grid infrastructure in a simple way. XtreemOS targets the Linux well-accepted open source operating system extending it to Grid with native support for virtual organizations. One of the most important challenges in XtreemOS is the identification of the basic functionalities which are to be embedded in the Linux kernel.
A set of operating system services, extending those found in the standard Linux distribution, will provide Linux users with all the Grid capabilities associated with current Grid middleware, but fully integrated into the OS. The underlying Linux OS will be extended as needed to support virtual organizations spanning across many machines and to supply appropriate interfaces to Grid OS services.
Installed on each participating machine (personal computer, cluster of workstations, mobile devices), the XtreemOS system will provide for the Grid what a traditional Operating System offers for a single computer: abstraction from the hardware and secure resource sharing between different users. It will thus considerably ease the work of users belonging to virtual organizations giving them the illusion of using a traditional computer, and releasing them from dealing with the complex resource management issues of a typical Grid environment. By integrating Grid capabilities into the Linux kernel, XtreemOS will also provide a more robust, secure and easier-to-manage infrastructure for system administrators. This will be experimentally demonstrated with a set of real applications, provided by well-known industrial partners, that cover a large spectrum of application fields.

Christine Morin
Christine Morin is senior researcher bij INRIA. Ze is wetenschappelijk coordinator van XtreemOS (XtreemOS website), een vierjarig EU 'integrated project' dat loopt sinds June 2006. Haar ingenieurstitel behaalde ze aan het Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) in Rennes (Frankrijk), waarna ze verder informatica studeerde aan de Universiteit van Rennes I. IN 1990 promoveerde ze aan diezelfde universiteit en in 1998 behaalde ze haar Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches. Sinds 1991 is ze werkzaam als onderzoeker bij INRIA, onder meer aan projecten zoals Solidor, CAPS en PARIS bij IRISA/INRIA-Rennes. Tussen 2000 en 2002 was ze tijdelijk assistant professor aan IFSIC (Universiteit van Rennes I).
Sylvain Jeuland
Sylvain Jeuland is bezig met zijn promotie in het kader van het PARIS project-team op INRIA Rennes - Bretagne Atlantique research centre. Hij is afgestudeerd aan de ENSEIRB IT universiteit in Bordeaux in 2007. Hij maakt deel uit van het XtreemOS projectteam. Zijn onderzoeksinteresses liggen in het beheren van virtuele organisaties en security in gridomgevingen.
