Grid technologie wint steeds meer aan belang in zowel commerciele omgevingen als in de academische wereld (zie onder meer de recente ISOC-briefing van Brian Carpenter over GRIDs). Steeds meer toepassingen vinden ruime toepassing. Met de verschillende gedistribueerde infrastructuren die nu beschikbaar zijn, is bijvoorbeeld de analyse van data op afstand ineens een haalbare kaart geworden. Recente voorbeelden zijn onder meer data webs, data grids en het semantische web. In deze masterclass zal dr. Bob Grossman een breed overzicht laten zien van de infrastructuur en de tools die op dit moment beschikbaar zijn om data - desnoods wereldwijd verspreid - beschikbaar te maken. De masterclass bevat verschillende case studies uit de wetenschap, engineering en de commerciele praktijk, zowel clustergebaseerde tools als grid-tools en web services uit de webgemeenschap. Daarnaast geeft hij een overzicht van de huidige en opkomende standaarden op dit gebied, zoals OGSA (Open Grid Services Architecture). Na het bezoeken van de masterclass bent u wegwijs in de belangrijkste technieken op het gebied van analyse en mining van gedistribueerde data. De masterclass is niet alleen relevant voor onderzoekers uit de academische wereld en het bedrijfsleven, maar ook voor diegenen die meer van Grid techologie in het algemeen willen weten.
Toegangsprijs voor de masterclass voor niet-leden van ISOC.nl is EUR 100, leden van ISOC.nl betalen slechts EUR 50
(word lid!). Vooraf reserveren gewenst via email. De masterclass wordt gehouden op 25 maart 2003 van 13.00 uur tot 17.00
uur in het gebouw van het CWI, Kruislaan 413, Amsterdam (Turingzaal, Z 011) in Amsterdam
(routebeschrijving). De lezing wordt
mede georganiseerd door de Advanced
Internet Research-groep van de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Er is een beperkt aantal gratis plaatsen beschikbaar
voor AIO's en studenten, vraag hierover om informatie via Michiel Leenaars.
Aansluitend is er gelegenheid om samen met de overige deelnemers aan de masterclass en de spreker nog even iets
te drinken en door te denken over het belang van gridtechnologie en gedistribueerde data.
Over Robert Grossman
Robert Grossman is directeur van het Laboratory for Advanced Computing en het National Center for Data Mining van de Universiteit van Illinois in Chicago en woordvoerder van de Data Mining Group, een industrieel consortium dat PMML (Predictive Model Markup Language) ontwikkelt. Hij is bovendien directeur van de Two Cultures Group, die diensten en consultancy levert op datagebied. Hij heeft meer dan vijfenzeventig papers gepubliceerd. Hij is houder van het record transatlantische informatieoverdracht, samen met nog een aantal (waaronder ook Nederlandse) partijen als Nikhef en SARA.

Grid technology is fastly becoming an important factor in research and business environments. On the 25th of March 2003, ISOC.nl (Internet Society Nederland) organizes a masterclass at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The wellknown expert Robert L. Grossman (professor at University of Chicago, and current holder of the world land speed record for transporting data) will speak about data grids and the other upcoming technologies, technologies for analysis and mining of huge amounts of data distributed across various countries and organisations.
A variety of distributed infrastructures have emerged which support the remote and distributed analysis of data, including data webs, data grids, and semantic webs. With clusters and high performance networks becoming common, the analysis of remote and distributed data is now practical. In his masterclass dr. Grossman will present an overview of the infrastructure and tools available for analyzing globally distributed data, such as the Globus toolkit and new protocols such as OGSA (Open Grid Services Architecture).
The masterclass will include case studies from science, engineering, and business. Grossman will talk about both cluster and grid based tools from high performance computing as well as web services being developed by the web community. He will present an overview of the current and emerging standards. The goal of the masterclass is to provide researchers, practitioners, and advanced students with an introduction to techniques for analyzing and mining globally distributed data.
Admission fee for the masterclass for non-members of ISOC.nl is EUR 100, members pay only EUR 50
(join!). Reserve a place via email. The masterclass is held on 25 march 2003 from 13.00 to 17.00 at the CWI, Kruislaan 413, Amsterdam (Turingzaal, Z 011) in Amsterdam
(directions). The masterclass is organised in cooperation with the Advanced Internet Research-group of the University of Amsterdam. There is a limited number of seats available for university and PHD students, enquire with Michiel Leenaars for availability.
About Robert Grossman
Robert Grossman is director of the Laboratory for Advanced Computing and the National Center for Data Mining of the University of Illinois in Chicago and spokesperson of the Data Mining Group, an industrial consortium that is developing PMML (Predictive Model Markup Language). He is also director of the Two Cultures Group, an organisation that delivers services and consultancy in the field of data. He has published over seventyfive papers. He currently holds (together with several other parties, including Dutch SARA and Nikhef) the record for transatlantic information transport.
